Ukraine’s Battleground as Seen in Satellite Images


The shaky cease-fire seems to be holding in Ukraine, but the conflict on the ground still remains.

The cease-fire was imposed late Friday, but was thrown into peril over the weekend by the shelling of Mariupol and fighting near the airport of the rebel-held city of Donetsk in the country’s east. Col. Andriy Lysenko, a spokesman for Ukraine’s National Security Council, told reporters Monday there had been about half a dozen rebel violations of the cease-fire.

NATO released satellite images showing Russian forces inside Ukraine, but Russia has repeatedly denied its involvement. Now, Amnesty International has its own satellite images showing the build-up of artillery and armor in Ukraine.
