Ukraine’s president and pro-Russian separatists reached a cease-fire deal on Friday to end the violence that has swept the eastern part of the country and killed nearly 6,000 people over the past five months
“Human life is of the highest value. And we need to do everything that is possible and impossible to stop bloodshed and end people’s suffering,” President Petro Poroshenko said in a statement.
Poroshenko ordered Ukrainian forces to stop their operations at 11 a.m. EDT following a protocol signed by representatives of Ukraine, Russia, the rebels and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
